Guitar Hero and Rock Band developer Harmonix has a burning desire to create a modern successor to its 2003 PS2 hit, Amplitude, for the PS3 and PS4. However, there’s a catch – they need to determine the level of interest in such a project. And the answer? Kickstarter.

Harmonix just launched its crowdfunding campaign a few hours ago, and already, it has raised $75,604 of its $775K goal, with 18 days remaining until the May 23rd deadline.

“Thanks to the advancements in technology and the significant creative leaps our studio has made, we are confident that we can rebuild Amplitude for the current consoles and turn it into an even more astonishing experience than before,” the developer declared on its Kickstarter page. “We aim to offer an updated soundtrack, breathtaking visuals, and precisely tuned controls. These enhancements will be built upon the core mechanics and the signature difficulty that made both FreQuency and Amplitude such remarkable experiences when they first made their debut.”

This isn’t the first time Harmonix has shown interest in an Amplitude follow-up. Way back in 2009, the studio’s CEO and co-founder, Alex Rigopulos, mentioned that he was in discussions with Sony about reviving the franchise. Unfortunately, as other projects took precedence, nothing came of it.

Backers can snag a PS3 / PS4 Cross-Buy version of Amplitude HD for $20. Meanwhile, shelling out $40 will enable one to get a code two weeks before the rest of the public around March 2015.

Eurogamer editor-in-chief Tom Bramwell had high praise for Amplitude when it was released in 2003, although he was let down by the song selection. “It would be great to be able to download additional songs, but this is PS2 Online, not Xbox Live,” he wrote in his Amplitude review at the time. How times have changed indeed.
