Scrolls, the strategic digital collectible card game crafted by the Minecraft creator Mojang, officially comes to an end on Tuesday, February 13th.
In July 2015, Mojang indicated that it would cease updating the game, yet it also mentioned that it would keep the servers operational until at least July 1st, 2016. Surprisingly, Scrolls has endured much longer than that.
“The launch of the Scrolls beta was an outstanding success,” Mojang declared at that time. “Tens of thousands of players engaged in battles daily, and a significant number of them remain active to this day. Regrettably, the game has reached a stage where it can no longer sustain continuous development.”
Now, the moment has arrived to permanently shut down the game. Nevertheless, Mojang intends to allow the community to host their own game servers shortly, as the developer mentioned in a post on the Scrolls website.
“We’ve made certain advancements towards being able to release the server software to the public, along with a slightly modified client that can connect to such servers,” stated Mojang’s Måns Olson.
“Although we are still unable to guarantee that this will occur or set a specific date, we have strong expectations that we’ll be able to do so in the next few weeks or months.
“If and when this takes place, the game client/server will not be open source. However, the game database will be fully editable by the community. This would enable a certain degree of customization, including adjusting card stats, creating new cards based on existing rules, altering various configurable settings (such as gold gain), and modifying the set list of trials.”
To bid farewell to the game, a community tournament is scheduled for Sunday. You can play with the developers on Friday, February 9th.
