Skullgirls 2nd Encore: New Char, Consoles & Switch
Skullgirls 2nd Encore is set to make its way to the current-generation Xbox consoles before this month comes to an end.
A decade after its initial debut, Skullgirls will be available on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S on July 19th. Back in 2019, its arrival on Microsoft systems was indefinitely postponed “due to unforeseen development and production obstacles”. But now, three years later, it seems those hurdles have been cleared, as – noticed by TheGamer – a new store page for the game has been activated on the Xbox store.
However, last month, Skullgirls 2nd Encore received a flood of negative Steam reviews after an update to the 2D fighting game. This update removed allusions to real-world hate groups, made the content less sexually “exploitative”, and introduced some adjustments to content that the developer now deems to be in “poor taste”.
“Although the Renoir family and the Black Egrets were originally intended to evoke images of an oppressive militant regime, we felt that the manner in which this was manifested (particularly through red armbands, flags, and symbolism) was uncomfortably close – especially considering the unfortunate fact that some of these hate groups are still active in various ways to this day,” explained the game director, Charley Price, at that time.
“While alluding to some of this can have narrative significance, we have made several small adjustments throughout the game to ensure that this content is less exploitative (for example, the opening of Filia’s Story Mode),” Price added.
