Treyarch Responds to COD Drama Sony Works on PS Exclusive IP Ex-COD Devs Make New PS IP COD:BO4 Campaign Footage Leaks COD:MW Crosses with BO Easter Eggs This Year’s COD:BO Cold War COD Zombies’ Blundell Exits COD:BO4’s Final Op: Dark Divide Man Guilty in COD Swatting Incident
Earlier in June, we brought you the news of how an update for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 introduced thrilling new weapons, yet unfortunately, these weapons were concealed behind loot boxes. This decision drew widespread criticism from players, who accused Activision and Treyarch of introducing a pay-to-win aspect to the game. Notably, one of the DLC weapons, the S6 Stingray tactical rifle, appears to be exceptionally potent at the moment.
This week, Treyarch responded to the uproar and disclosed their plans to address the situation. In a post on the Black Ops 4 subreddit, Treyarch announced their intention to “offer all players novel methods to obtain weapons simply by engaging in the game in any mode”.
These “new ways” encompass a community challenge that unlocks the free and fully customizable Grav assault rifle (which is currently active), an upcoming Contracts system (more details to follow shortly), a “new avenue” to acquire more loot boxes in all modes, and additional earnable duplicate-protected Weapon Bribes that will be released in the future.
Delving into the specifics, Treyarch stated that the new Contracts system, set to be introduced in Black Ops 4’s next major update in late June, will enable players to complete Contracts on a daily basis, with rotating daily challenges spanning every mode, including Zombies. Here’s a glimpse of how Contracts appears in the new After Action Report:
While these new systems are expected to facilitate the acquisition of DLC weapons, as theoretically, we’ll be able to obtain more loot boxes at a faster pace, they fail to address the fundamental issues with Black Ops 4’s monetization or even the primary concern of locking DLC weapons within loot boxes.
As numerous individuals have pointed out, these updates do not prevent duplicates from appearing in loot boxes (most suggest that duplicates should be completely eliminated). We’ve been informed to anticipate additional earnable duplicate-protected Weapon Bribes, but if these Weapon Bribes function in the same manner as those currently in the game, you might receive a MKII weapon instead of a DLC gun from the recent Days of Summer update.
Furthermore, the new systems do not provide a direct means to purchase the new DLC weapons. Some who possess the underwhelming Black Ops Pass believe they should receive these weapons for free, and it’s difficult to dispute this viewpoint.
We’ll have to wait and observe how profoundly these new systems transform the Black Ops 4 grinding experience. It’s reasonable to say that players are skeptical about their potential impact.
“We at the studio are constantly perusing the numerous comments posted on social channels and we continue to integrate player input into each update,” Treyarch stated. “Therefore, please keep your feedback flowing to assist us in making the core gameplay experience as exceptional as possible.”
